Even before she was three months pregnant, my wife wanted to go and buy a baby bedding. Naturally, I wondered what the hurry was all about. There are metal baby beds, wood ones, plastic disposable ones (who would dispose a baby bed!) and even beds made of medicinal and therapeutic materials. They come with wheels, coasters, rocking attachments and in one memorable instance, with a dangling toy and battery operated fan. No wonder the kids today are spoilt rotten. Imagine if they started their lives with such comfort, they would only grow up craving everything fancy. And the suckers that we parents are, we have no choice but to give in!

Alzheimers is a Disease that Never Seems to Stop

Alzheimers is a difficult disease for any family to deal with. When I was married over 15 years ago, my Father-In-Law was a joke telling, happy go lucky card playing person. We didn’t understand at first what started happening to him. At first, we thought it was just part of getting older. He would forget what he was doing, or where he put the keys or some other odd thing. We didn’t realize at the time, that all of us were about to start down a long and difficult road.

Alzheimers disease affects the mind in such a way, that the person (at least in our situation) cannot function in normal situations. In our situation, Dad started living more and more in the past, and less and less in the present. One time, when Dad’s wife was sick and in the hospital, he couldn’t remember where she was. “Where is she?”, Dad would ask. She is at the hospital, we would reply. Five minutes later, we would repeat the same discussion. We would do this over and over.

In our case, as Alzheimers progressed, Dad would stop recognizing us. One time, my husband went to visit and Dad hollered and yelled at the strange man who had come over. Dad even threw a punch when the strange man known as his son came into the home.

Alzheimers is a disease that never seems to stop. As Dad’s condition worsened, he would start wandering off – not knowing where he was. We had to get a door alarm that would sound when the door was opened to keep him from leaving. However, even that didn’t work all the time. One time, in winter, Dad wandered off in his P.J.s. We had to call the police to help us find him.

Now Dad has moved to a secure facility that is designed to care for patients with Alzheimers. He seems happy, but it is hard for us, to see his life so drained of what it was and what it could still be if he didn’t have Alzheimers disease. I think Alzheimers is a disease that affects the whole family. If we visit, he doesn’t know who we are. He doesn’t even remember that we were there. He still remembers that he was married, but he doesn’t remember to whom he was married to.

What causes Alzheimers? The doctors don’t know for sure. Doctor’s know that each patient reacts differently to the disease and the disease progresses differently for each person. There is still no treatment for the disease. For our family, we take comfort knowing that Dad is happy and not in pain, even if he doesn’t know us anymore.

Be wary when looking for a good spyware remover. There are many advertisements today for spyware removers that are misleading, and there are some phony programs that actually install spyware of their own if you use them! In fact, I may not be so wrong: in most major cities or highly-trafficked areas, there are now noise pollution laws. In my area on the west coast, for example, it is an infraction to play one of those obnoxious car stereos louder than those homes, 35 feet away can hear. But does that stop the clueless or wannabes from invasively selfishly egotistically bleating their sheep sounds as if we all are impressed or accept the inclusion into their heinous worlds? No.

So the solution, I decided, was to get some good soundproofing materials as one of my home improvement ideas. Most Instructors Offer More Than One Option for Writing a Research Paper

Some of us have the good fortune of taking a research paper class in high school—preparing us for the inevitable assignment in college. But if you are not so fortunate, here are a few suggestions and guidelines to use for writing your first research paper:

UNDERSTAND THE ASSIGNMENT

Read it through a couple of times. Highlight key words—any main prompting words and any action words.

CHOOSE a WORKABLE PROMPT/TOPIC

Most instructors offer more than one option for a research paper. If you have a choice, decide which prompt you will do according to which you want to do, that which you have interest in. You must do what interests you--otherwise you will be miserable through the researching and writing phases and your reader(s) will be miserable reading it.

What if you don’t care for any of the options? Force one choice to work for you: one man I worked with years ago could not see writing a 30-paged paper on women in California history, but he kept at it until he came up with a most original approach: writing on women as whores/prostitutes during the Gold Rush. He loved the work and his readers were riveted.

As often happens in college courses (especially the larger lecture courses), you get no prompt or only a vague one (to write forty pages on any relevant topic, say).

Ask yourself questions—pursue the answers.
Follow your curiosity—one concern you have will lead to many areas, and subsequently to many focused ideas.
Ask friends/other teachers their opinions.
Look into the Library of Congress Subject Headings, a huge book with a zillion subjects and their related subcategories, or go online to a subject index such as www.interconnected.com, a site that gives you 100’s of possibly related topics when you type in one word.

DECIDE ON A MODE—Many instructors will tell you to “compare and contrast” or to “prepare a statistical analysis,” for example, but for those assignments that are more general, you must decide yourself how to set up the paper, how to format it. Depending on the class and your angle of approach, you may use an argumentative, problem/ solution, compare/contrast, analysis, narrative summary and interpretation, or combination of two or more of the above, for instance.

If you are not given a mode, you need to decide upon/establish a format. Break your paper into organized segments, setting up a format for your paper with, for example, the assets and liabilities…, or the spiritual/emotional/physical/intellectual changes…, or x number of decades…, etc..

NARROW YOUR FOCUS/TOPIC--Make sure your topic is manageable. Writing about Nazism in ten pages will not be sufficient space to cover everything needing coverage; the five most heinous medical atrocities practiced on men at Auschwitz will.

DEVELOP A WORKING THESIS--While you search for topics/themes that interest you, and later, as you narrow the topic, you will have to come up with a point, a main point, so the paper doesn’t just hang there with a bunch of facts/ideas stacked on it.

Ask yourself those curious questions—then answer them. The answer(s)—written down in complete sentence(s)—will be your thesis statement(s).

Consider what if scenarios. Your guesses—a.k.a. your hypothesis/es—will become your thesis statement(s).

Consider what your colleagues/peers/friends/family members experts think about the topic at hand. Do you agree? Go with their opinion as your thesis statement. Do you disagree? Go with your position, then, turning it into a thesis statement.

Consider the assignment. Does it ask you, specifically, to answer a question? Your answer, once you add up all of your research/ideas/ observations, should equal a complete statement.

WRITE and/or SUBMIT AN OUTLINE

I promise it helps to have a set of sub-topics you can write down and post next to your desk or pc, referring to the outline as you go so you stay focused…anchored.

COLLECT RESOURCES

Use a combination of books, periodicals, professional/academic journals, surveys or polls, the Net, interviews; the World Wide Web (being careful to use reliable sources), media materials—audio/video/ newspapers/microfiche/microfilm. (Ask for help using and citing all of these.)

DO A BIBLIOGRAPHY-immediately! Before you read any thing or person thoroughly, write down the source’s information. This is vital, as if you forget and write the paper and do the bibliography last—after your human sources have gone or you have returned written materials or left Internet links long ago—you will be missing dates, names, titles, and page numbers you need for accuracy.

READING and TAKING NOTES for a RESEARCH PAPER

When reading a piece for a paper, you are reading “to take” away something you need. Do not read whole books. No time for that.

1. Read the table of contents (in front)-find key words, ideas, people, related to your paper, and read just that /those chapter/s.

2. Use the index (in back), seeking out only key themes/phrases/words that apply to your research.

3. Look at each book’s bibliography/works cited page/s [at very end of book/article] for suggested sources.

Cite your source every time you use direct (word-for-word) quotes. Cite your source every time you do not use direct wording but do use any fact/theory/date you did not come up with yourself (indirect quotes).

DRAFT THE PAPER

Use the same components in a research paper that you would in an English assignment (using headers in the scientific/psych. experiment papers):

Use clear appropriate diction, and a scholarly/mature tone
Use an engaging opener/ introduction.
Use a complete, thoughtful, fresh and original thesis.

PROOFREAD/REVISE THE PAPER-

Follow a revising/editing checklist, or craft one of your own to follow: make sure you have an introduction, ample support, and a satisfying conclusion.

Make sure your paragraphs are well-ordered, your syntax (sentences) are orderly, varied, and well-punctuated.

And make sure your spelling and punctuation is clean!

You are on your way to your first research paper. Make it a great one!

Make Space at Home by Use of a Recycle Bin

We do our best to collect as many items as possible from our homes , in our daily lives, for recycling purposes. With that in mind, we keep a large blue recycle bin in our kitchen for that very purpose.

However, not everyone in our family is as diligent about recycling and clearing to make more space, as my husband is. We secretly call him the 'Recycling Nazi'. He rules our recycling with an iron fist. Woe to the person who mistakenly throws an non-recyclable into recycle bin! My husband will hunt that person down and they will most certainly pay - getting a long lecture about Making Space at home and taking the time to differentiate between items and how irresponsible it is to throw just any old thing into the recycling bin.

Of course in line with his commitment to recycling, he is also the one tasked with the responsibility of dragging the recycle bin out to the curb and retrieving them again, once the contents have been collected. Again, it seems my husband is the only one truly committed to the recycling schedule to make space at home . The collectors have a very hit-and-miss approach to gathering from the blue bins and they'll often come earlier than scheduled or not at all. This sets my husband to scrambling trying to get our bin to the curb before the truck leaves, or conversely grumbling to himself, when our recycle bin sits at the curb uncollected for days on end.

Of course, my husbands efforts are well-placed, and no one can slag him for his commitment to the environment. In fact, all of us should really take a lesson from him. I'm sure if we all worked together, it would make the entire process run more smoothly for everyone involved. Unfortunately, today's pace of life is so hectic. Whether at home, work or school, many people barely have time to make space at home, let alone to take the time to sort through their recyclables and place them in the properly labeled recycle bin. However, if we can all try to think more long term, and think about where our planet will be in a few years from now, it just might make squeeze in a little extra time in our day for recycling.

We all have made more of an effort recently to make space at home. My husband has given us several reminders about what is recyclable and what is really just garbage. He's also given us lesson on giving containers a quick rinse before placing them in the recycle bin and cautioned us about removing any sharp edges on our containers. Every little bit helps, and feel that we are making some positive improvement in doing our part for the planet.

Many people would like to publish a book. It was a dream for many of us who had to deal with agents or Self pubishing until recently, when Print on Demand Program came to the fore; the dream seemed out of many of our grasps. Tody there are many options for someone who wants to publish a book, but it is a good idea to do a little homework before contacting a publishing company with your manuscript.

I have found that, as a pubisher you cannot overlook the Internet as a valuable resource and as a writer I find that it is a great way to find writing jobs. One writing assignment involved writing a manuscript for a publishing company. The book that I wrote is part of a series of books that address questions about specific careers. The assignment was ideal for me because I wanted to publish a book about being a therapist who works with autistic children. My topic fit the publisher’s needs and I went to work.

I completed the first draft of the entire manuscript in a record two-month period of time. I worked on the book for about six hours every day, often staying up way past midnight to get my thoughts organized into the text. I found that we would publish a book on my topic, but not in the near future. I completed the manuscript about six months ago and I just now got the contract from the publisher. I still have to read and sign the contract to get things moving.

I am pleased that I will have the opportunity to publish a book in the upcoming year, but I still have a way to go before the book hits the shelves. The editor is going to go over the manuscript on a page by page basis. I imagine that this will take a great deal of time. That is not a problem for me. I am a diligent writer and my desire to publish a book is a driving force that will keep me on my toes.

I have looked into other ways to publish a book as well but I find some of the options a little confusion. Lulu is a company that will publish a book for an author through its print on demand program. I am not sure if this is a viable option for me. I am not one for vanity publishing and Lulu seems to have some of the qualities of a vanity publisher.

For right now, I’m sticking to working with a publisher on assignment. If you want to publish a book, you may want to use a company like iuniverse.com, Lulu, infinitypublishing.com, but all said and done, if you want to publish a book that will be read, consider working with an editor.

The Drawbacks of a Prepaid Cellular Phone Before Investing Your Hard Earned Cash on It

I was a big holdout before I finally broke down and got myself a cellular phone. I didn’t really think it was that more convenient than using a land line, and I definitely didn’t want people to get a hold of me whenever they wanted to. I liked the little bit of anonymity I had and usually despised it when friends would get up from a nice dinner to answer their cell phones. It didn’t help the matter that most of my friends were spending between twenty and forty dollars every month to cover their cell phone bills; the only way I could afford to pay that much for a phone was if I decided to stop eating for a month or two.

You’ll note that all of the last paragraph was in past-tense since I did, in fact, buy a cell phone. I picked up a Virgin prepaid cellular phone from Target and, with a special sale, got the phone for free. Unlike most cellular phone plans which require multi-year commitments and huge fees for using too many minutes, prepaid cellular phones allow you to top up time in the same way that you add time to a phone card. Though the individual minutes are more expensive ($.25 for the first 10 minutes of every day and $.10 for every minute thereafter, no roaming and no time restrictions, text messages for $.10 apiece) if you’re not using your cell phone very often you can end up saving a lot of money. I usually end up paying only $10 or so every month for my service, which is a lot better than what most of my friends are paying.

Regardless of the service provider, prepaid cellular phones do have their drawbacks. One of the best perks my friends with standard cellular plans have is that they usually get free nights and weekends, which I don’t get with my prepaid phone. The phone isn’t quite as good as the phones which usually come either for free or at steep discounts with the standard plans, though my phone was free, has a full color screen, and has full internet access, so I can’t complain too much. Overall, I’m extremely pleased with my prepaid cellular phone, though I wouldn’t suggest it to anyone who plans on spending a lot of time talking on his or her cell phone.

5 Tips on How to Do the Daunting and Equally Challenging Task of an Employment Search

It can be a daunting experience, for many reasons, to do an employment search. Equally challenging, you might feel, is the employment search you do online. You might have caught on by now to Craigslist, but if not—or if you want to extend the search—you either start there and/ then consider the many kinds of networks and job banks and boards that fit your skill sets, income needs, and other particulars.

This can get intense. Employment searches can lead you to agencies, advice, and attitudes you feel overwhelmed by. Breathe. There’s a way to “narrow” your search, making efforts pay off, literally and figuratively.

Now, as a freelance writer, I access specific banks and boards, but my example will hopefully help you clarify your own employment search process.

1) COMPANY and LOCATION SEARCHES

Find job boards that have updated classified for employment in your area and in major companies you might be interested in working with.

For the Bay Area, for instance, Tribe (sanfrancisco.tribe.net) features a search engine and drop-down menu to look for jobs by company and category (field).

Considering your area of expertise, find the companies who employ your type, and visit their help wanted/employment search/seeking XYZ pages. For example, I consult many sites—like Pearson Education-- belonging to publishers, visit their employment/jobs section, and look from there for any gigs I might be good for.

2) CAREER SEARCHES

That is, for example, if you are a journalist, seek journalist, press, news, magazine, periodical ads at such places as NewsJobs.net, which offers postings for NewsJobs in the U.S., NewsJobs in Canada, and NewsJobs in the U.K..

In the same respect, when you do an employment search on a major search engine and are typing in different and varied words and phrases, be as thorough and thoughtful as you can. If you are a carpenter, look for more than just carpenter jobs. Type in all the variations you can think of for the word carpenter—“carpentry,” “builder,” “building,” “construction”—and all the different words you can think of for jobs—“careers,” “help wanted,” “needed,” “places for.” I found, for instance, a great publication called Places for Writers, which is not dens and coffee shops and what we would likely first think of when we read the word “places”, but which is places calling for submissions.

3) SUBSCRIBE to NEWSLETTERS in YOUR FIELD

Newsletters are one of the greatest cogs in the Internet machine. They are used by webmasters and web mistresses to get visitors to their sites, but they are—unlike a lot of advertising that drives us nuts—most valuable sources. Besides plugs for doo-dads and stuff to buy or pay for, they have advice columns, special interest sections, and calls for experts/job announcements. And they are free!

I subscribe to five different newsletters for writers. Because of those, and because I read every little box, frame, passage, entry in every one, I have garnered about 50% of the job/gig leads I followed up on and landed.

4) GO DIRECTLY to the SOURCE

Well, sort of directly. The newsletter editor is the one who runs a site that centers on your field. Visit the website. (Don’t gloss over the many links that say “click here”, in other words, no matter how many filters you have up to visually block all that linkage.) Those same writer newsletters have vested interest (creative, intellectual, financial) in doing the same work you are making an employment search for, and typically feature a job board exclusively for professionals in your field. A daily newsletter with writing leads also features high-paying and low-paying (ugh) job sections on the parent site, Freelancewriting.com. In fact, besides a super archive of articles on writing, the site is primarily one great, great (in size and quality) job bank. I have gotten at least 25% of my gigs there.

5) OPTION: NETWORKERS

Just as many other professionals care enough about humans in the workforce and getting them into that workforce that they have built businesses to connect employers with employees and free agents with clients. Yes, they usually cost something, so you might want to be the kind of person who believes that it takes money to make money. But many are quite successful at what they do. I have—in my reading and employment searching and career developing hours—read many accounts of how beneficial these networks are…networks such as ScriptLance.com, Guru.com, ELance.com, for specific types, and, for general sources, such network solutions planners as Careers.com, HotJobs.com, JobSeeker, and Jobvertise will work for you and with you to find you a job in your area of expertise, location, emotional and intellectual setting, and income bracket.

Of course, the other 25% of my income comes from doing my own employment search elsewhere: in-person networking, word-of-mouth (be good at what you do every time you do it!), and, of course, the beneficent, beneficial, benefiting and fitting Craigslist!!!!

Cheap Text Books Are a Great Way to Save Money If You’re a College Student

If you’re in college you most likely fit the stereotype of the poor college student, eating ramen and sucking down coffee to stay fed and awake for your late-night study sessions. Of course, tuition doesn’t cover everything; college students still need to pay for things like housing, clothes, food, and books. Many students’ schedules make it hard, if not impossible, to work a part-time job while in school, especially if they take part in any extracurricular activities. Summer work is about all that’s available, and summer jobs can be low priorities to students looking for solid internships to help out their graduate school or future employment opportunities. Unfortunately, many of the best internships are unpaid, leaving students even more strapped for cash.

One of the most unexpected expenses for first-year college students is when the first walk into the bookstore. Sure, if you’re a first-year you realize that you’re going to have to buy books, but there’s a good chance you didn’t realize that the books for one semester can easily cost $1,000. “But wait, it’s probably not so bad,” the first-years argue, “I can just sell my books back at the end of the semester and get my money back.” Though this strategy may work for some students, for most it’s nothing but a pipe dream.

Used books are by far the easiest way to find cheap text books; they can often be found right alongside the new books in your campus bookstore. An even better way to find cheap text books is to by them directly from students at the end of a semester. If you know what classes you’ll be taking and what textbooks they’ll require it’s easy to find cheap text books from the students who are already in the class and looking to sell off their books. By cutting out the middleman you can find cheap text books and they can sell their books at a better profit.

On the other hand, if you let the craving be ok as it is, not being harsh on it, giving it room, not fighting against it, it MUST subside over time. Try it. You have nothing to lose. Smoke slowly. Let your self enjoy every inhale. Let yourself relax with ever exhale. Once you have mastered this practice of acceptance, THEN put your attention on quitting. I am certain you will notice a difference.

At the very least, you will not be as unhappy about learning to stop smoking cigarettes as you were before. Beating yourself up for smoking or for not being able to quit smoking is just as much of a killer as the smoking itself. Beating yourself up kills your mood.

So, take the Zen approach instead. Let yourself feel at peace with the smoking, and then take appropriate action to quit smoking (a patch, a pumpkin seed, or whatever). Make self-acceptance your truest goal, and your goal to stop smoking cigarettes will come much more easily.

You’d think Aristotle and Sophocles bandied the question about, it has been such a plaguing question, one that has been asked for decades, for centuries, even: what is the cure for depression? A consideration of the symptoms, the causes, and the studies to find that all elusive cure for depression might at least set your mind at ease enough to realize you are not alone. A couple of examples might help to realize the search for a cure for depression is an insidious struggle, a desperate measure, a do-or-die imperative shared by millions.

According to US News (2006) online, approximately 18.8 million people suffer with depression. They don’t feel like eating, socializing or sleeping. They sleep too much. They have feelings of doom, of loneliness, of alienation. They feel worthless or consumed by strange guilt for nothing they have done wrong. They feel wiped out, exhausted, weak. They carry a truckload of trucks on their souls. Simple things are impossible, important events are meaningless.

In seeking a cure for their depression, they might find the information first reveals that each cause or set of causes calls for different treatment or treatments. The cause can be genetic, biological, psychological, can be clinical or conditional. I was depressed from an early age. One of the first articles I read on cures for depression noted that depression is anger turned inward. My therapist, for example, taught me that to fight it was to invite it to come on even stronger, so I learned to accept it and go with it, climbing into bed surrounding by my favorite things, wallowing in, really. (I took many “mental health” days off from work when there was no such thing, save “sick” days, so I had to call it something the non-depressed would accept—and pay for, if I had sick time coming to me—flu, allergies, etc..)

Still others opt for exercise, meditation, visualization, aromatherapy, changing food plans/diets, and more. I had tried all of these. Zip.

My mother was severely depressed all the years we were growing up. I carried on the tradition, feeling chronically, clinically depressed and seeking a cure for my depression for over twenty-five years. I was, oddly enough, one of the “lucky” ones: my depression was partner to an equally common disorder called Attention Deficit Disorder. So though I was at first treated only for the cure for depression alone, with Prozac, which saved me from offing myself but added a hundred pounds to my already hefty frame, I was eventually (in my early forties) treated for ADD with medication that took away the depression for the most part. Some days I can hear it coming, can feel in my gut the angst churning and brewing, but can embrace it for what it is, climb in bed with books and toys and whatever other comfort items I choose, and ride that bitch of a malady out. I started wearing glasses in Grade 7. I had noticed that no matter how I would squint and strain, I could not see what the teacher had written on the board. It was very frustrating and it was a great relief when I finally could see! However, I quickly discovered that wearing glasses had its down side.

Back in the 80's eyeglass frames for children, were not made to look trendy or fashionable. At least not in the economy section that I was forced to choose from. I ended up with eyeglasses that while enhancing my eyesight, did nothing for my looks or reputation as a bookworm!

I grew to despise my glasses. I got to the point where I would only use them out of desperation, preferring to stumble around, missing the sights in the name of fashion.

Finally in high school, my parents broke down and got me fitted for my first pair of contact lenses. I was relieved and delighted and thought that all my problems were solved! Little did I realize that the switch to contacts was merely a trade-off.

In the beginning my contact lenses were great. I quickly learned how to care for them and soon became a pro at putting them in and taking them out. I was a whiz. But then one day, in my rush, I dropped one! I looked everywhere, with one contact in and one eye virtually blind. It was pointless. My contact was nowhere to be found. I ended up having to resort to my cursed glasses, much to my chagrin.

As an adult, I have gone through several phases. I've tried disposable contact lenses of the two-week variety. Always looking for ways to save money, I found that these lenses would often last for up to six-weeks before I would finally need to change them. Unfortunately, after pushing the limit one time too many, I ended up with a red, inflamed ring around the edges of my eye, where the lens would wear and I couldn't wear contacts lenses again for six months!

In the meantime, I ended up purchasing two stylish pairs of eyeglasses at a two-for-one sale. One pair ended up breaking, but the other pair has served me well to this day.

A few months ago, I went for a long overdue eye exam and a fitting for contact lenses. I was charged an exorbitant price for the exam, that my insurance benefits refused to cover in full, and I was given an ill-fitting pair of contact lenses. Thankfully, I had the foresight to request a copy of my prescription which the optometrist reluctantly handed over.

I now have the option of going back to contact lenses, even part-time. However, I find I've become somewhat lazy, with comfort overriding my desire for fashion, and I've fallen back into the habit of wearing glasses on a full-time basis. I find wearing glasses to be simple and hassle-free. Today's options for frames range from basic to trendy, and have become a sought-after accessory for even the most stylish of individual.

You don’t know what you got till it’s gone; you don’t appreciate it until it happens to you…blah, blah, blah. Such are the clichés and sentiments of those of us who get into a major accident and the insurance company of the offending driver, the drunk who slammed into you, refuses full retribution. Those are the tunes played by those of us who lose a partner or spouse to another because we were too demanding, too difficult, too different. And those are the hackneyed statements, the only trite and obvious things we can come up with to utter when we find out our best friend of twenty-nine years has a unique form of cervical cancer that might allow her to live, oh, another year at most.

Yes, my friend has cervical cancer, what is less familiarly known as invasive endometrial adenocarcinoma. You understand “invasive” and from human sexuality class way back you get the “endometrial” part. But what you cannot seem to wrap your brain around is carcinoma…cancer. She is your age, which, last time you knew, was NOT old, was not dying time. But the condition she is in is that of what 5% of all other cervical cancer patients have survived. The other 95% had lesser complications: the cancer had not spread to the lymph nodes, which are very soft, very fleshy, very vulnerable to a corrosive agent chomping its way through human tissue.

If you are smart or have a strong stomach, you do a search for the causes, effects, symptoms, treatments, outcomes, support groups, and residual fallout of cervical cancer. You might find statistics: 500,000 cases worldwide; 300,000 die. 10,370 in US will be diagnosed with it; 3,710 will die. Mortality rates have declined by 50% over the last three decades.

Treatment includes cryogenics—freezing of the dysplasia, which is the culprit in its earliest stages (which was in your best friend when she was 20). Treatment might be preceded by a colposcopy—the use of a special scope (with a 40X magnifying power) that allows for examination of the cervix. It might mean laser surgery—wherein the offending growth (also called metastasis) is burned off/out. Treatment might include early conization—meaning a biopsy is done by taking a cone of the cervical canal. It might also require or point to the need for radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy, depending upon the severity, urgency, and choices the cervical cancer patient makes.

Cervical cancer works its way in stages, or exists in areas that are measured in stages: in stage I, the cancer invades the cervix beneath the top layer of cells. In stage II, the cancer extends beyond the cervix into nearby tissues, to the upper part of the vagina, and/or to the pelvic wall. In stage III, the cancer extends to the lower part of the vagina, and may be spreading into the pelvic wall and nearby lymph nodes. And in stage IV, the cancer has extended to the least protected or defensible parts of the body—the bladder, rectum, and/or other organs and parts of the body.

My friend has been found to have stage III cervical cancer, which may have reached the lymph nodes in the lungs. If this is the case, which we will know in six days, when the latest tests come back to her brilliant staff of oncologists and specialists. In some respects, she is lucky. She has been a health care provider to the elderly (as she is a clinical nurse specialist in the top of her field) for twenty years. So she will have that Florence Nightingale Clara Barton karma returned tenfold. At the same time, the numbers are not good for her stage of cervical cancel, despite what I think is a shockingly young age—45. In other respects, then, she aint so “lucky” and I am reeling from the surreality of our friendship coming to an end in the corporeal sense after we have been through so much worse it seemed at the time, and after we have used survival humor through it all. What else can you do?

Bad News; Once You Develop Acid Reflux Disease You Are Going to Have it For Life!

Gastroesophogeal reflux disorder (GERD) or more commonly referred to as ‘acid reflux’ disease is a painful and common disorder in adults of all ages, particularly in people 40 and over. The disorder is caused by the juices of the stomach backing up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation and sometimes damaging the lining of the esophagus itself. The burning sensation is also referred to as ‘heart burn’, since it is often felt in about the same place the heart rests in the chest cavity.

Many of the digestive enzymes of the stomach, such as pepsin, work best at an extremely low pH, or in other words a very acidic environment. It is for this reason that ‘parietal’ cells of the stomach lining produce and pump large quantities of the chemical hydrochloric acid into the stomach. Stomach fluids are therefore highly acidic, reaching pH’s as low as 1, which is about ten times more acidic than common battery acid, and a million times more acidic than water. It is this acid that causes the discomfort and damage associated with acid reflux disease.

The disorder can develop for a number of reasons. There is a lot of evidence suggesting that a likelihood to develop the disease can be genetic. Also, any trauma or injury to the esophageal sphincter, the circular muscle responsible for keeping stomach fluids out of the esophagus, can lead to the disorder. Such injury can be caused by frequent vomiting, or by a hiatal hernia.

The bad news is that once you develop acid reflux disease, you are going to have it for life. The good news is there are a wide variety of excellent treatments for the disorder that are now available, some by prescription and some over the counter. There are also a number of measures people can take to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux in addition to the use of medication.

There are three basic medication types popularly used for acid reflux. The first and most famous being the ‘antacids’, which all use some kind of strong base such as calcium carbonate, or magnesium carbonate to neutralize the acid of the stomach. Though fast acting, these treatments only last a short period and are not recommended for use in treating reoccurring heart burn. Some examples of antacids include Tums, Rolaids, and Alka-Seltzer.

Like antacids, ‘acid reducers’ are available over the counter but they work by actually lowering the amount of acid produced by the stomach and are usually effective for a longer period of time. The more popular acid reducers include Zantac, and Pepcid AC.

Acid reducers are often enough to counter milder forms of acid reflux disorder, but more moderate forms of the disease may require a doctor prescribed ‘proton pump inhibitor’ (PPI). PPI’s also function by lowering the amount of acid produced by the stomach, though by a different mechanism than acid reducers. For this reason they can be safely be used in conjunction with acid reducers. Some PPI’s include Prilosec, Prevacid, and Aciphex. Prilosec has recently been made available over the counter, though its continued use should be only be done under the advice of a medical professional.

Acne is a medical condition describing blocked skin pores that result in lesions. The bulging dome shape often takes on a white appearance. Black heads are simply comedones that have become opened, revealing the dark follicle plug within. These are basically small comedones that form from localized cellular reactions to the processes that cause acne. That usually occur in clusters and are sometimes too small to see, but can be felt as a series of little bumps along the skin surface.

Nodules are a more severe form of papules, extending deeper into the skin tissue and resulting in large raised legions that are usually inflamed, and painful to touch. My parents previously had a late model, 32" television in their living room. It drove my mother crazy to have that big TV sitting out plain view for all to see. She has some strange 1950's mentality, that it's somehow inappropriate for one to show off their TV set. She insisted that my father purchase a new model that would sit flush with the edge of their wall unit, and that could be enclosed behind doors of some fashion, when not in use.

My father (of course) jumped at the opportunity and went out and blew a wad of cash in the blink of an eye. Then he came home to make plans for some type of doors. This is where the story goes completely of the tracks: My dad somehow thought that using a bamboo blind to conceal this big TV would make a great fashion statement. And he spent three days rigging up this oddity. Now when people come to visit they can be driven to distraction trying to figure out what on earth is hidden behind that blind - AND exchange worried glances as to why my mother would allow a makeshift blind contraption to be the focal point of her living room.

In any case, my father is happy. This is one time when he actually benefitted by one of my mother's whims, wacky bamboo blind or not.

As for our household, while we do long for a sleek, flat screen, up-to-the-minute, brand new big TV, we have decided for the technology to become more stable and the prices to level out. While it is much more excited to jump on the bandwagon and purchase the latest and greatest television system, we've learned to be more practical and put first things first. And hey, we can always visit my parents and watch the big TV at their house!

Space Effiecient 17" Monitors Are the Way to Go

I've been using 17" computer monitors for years now. I think they're the perfect combination of affordability and functionality. 17" is large enough to provide a large graphical interface, big enough for playing games or movies, but still falling in a reasonable price range. The price between smaller monitors, such as 15" monitors, and 17" monitors is usually not very much, yet I've often found that it shoots up a lot going from 17" monitors to 19" or larger ones.

17" monitors are also good for saving space, especially if you are using the older CRT type technology. CRT monitors of any size are pretty darn big, and once you get into the 19" and beyond level you really need a lot of desk space to fit them. Personally, the extra two inches of monitor size in a 19" monitor just isn't worth the overall lack of room on my desk and the extra hassle in moving it around.

Of course, desk space is less of a problem with LCD monitors. 17" LCD monitors are extremely space effiecient, as well as 19" ones. I've noticed that LCD monitor screens tend to look bigger as well. I realize it's a kind of optical illusion and they aren't really bigger, but the 17" inches in an LCD seems to go a long way. The 17" inches is measured across the diagonal surface of the monitor, so any 17" monitors has the same screen size as any other, but LCD's seem to use it more effectively. Since the price on 19" LCDs is still pretty high, and the 17" monitors have become almost in line with their CRT counterparts, I think 17" LCDs are the way to go.

I don't think I'm the only one that feels this way either. I've noticed that 17" monitors seem to be a sort of standard for a lot of businesses. For a long time it was 15", but I really don't see as many 15" inch monitors these days. It seems like everyone is using a 17" monitor. Affordable and yet still fairly big, it's the right combination of luxury and practicality.

If you have the money to spend, and plenty of desk space, you may want to consider an even larger monitor. Of course, if you're not really using any graphical programs, don't play computer games, or ever watch movies on your computer, you have to ask yourself; do I really need it? 17" monitors are more than big enough.

When I say remote, I mean the town is so out there and secluded that there is no human postal delivery to the individual homes: we have to use a p.o. box at the p.o. down the street. When I say remote, I mean the electrical system and the phone wires are still above ground, in the Eucalyptus trees and Pines, so when it rains for more than a few hours, when the wind blows, or whenever, really, the power goes out. These two factors make it difficult to watch video rentals we have gotten from the video rental store, and make it impossible to subscribe to that video rental delivery service that is advertised on TV (NetFlix, for example) quite a bit these days.

But living in the woods, in a rural area that is quiet, crazy-free, and inundated with natural flora, fauna, and animals (raccoons, deer, possum, and more), makes any inconvenience worth it. Besides, it doesn't matter that we lose power one season every year: the rest of the year is ripe for video rentals, DVD rentals, and pizza we pick up ourselves. In fact, tonight my friend wants to see that movie where Bette Davis and Joan Crawford go at it, which I am thrilled to rent for him and watch with him. I can just hear her now, as we gripe if only we didn't live so far out... "But ya arrrre, Blanche, ya arrrre living out there in the boondocks."

America, What Do You Watch With 700+ Television Stations From Which to Plan Your Days and Nights?

Thank God and anyone else responsible for the multiple television stations and the choices they afford today. When I was a kid, at least a hundred years ago, it seems, considering the lack of technological options, we had three television stations. You know the ones: ABC, NBC, and CBS. We had only a few channels to click on the dial--no, no remote, no buttons, we had a dial that we spun like a coveted safe dial, waiting for just the right click to tune us into a clear enough picture to watch. We had the television stations that you could click on, sure, but you would get a big black line about a third of the width of the screen (which was limited to 6, 8, or 10 inches, by the way...no plasma, no HD)...a line that went down the center of the picture like a censor's marker might. We were told this was the mountain in the way. (We lived in the wooded and semi-mountainous terrain where it was better for skiers than it was for TV addicts.)

And skiers got only a bit more "snow" than we who wanted to stay inside with cocoa and "Batman" or fudge and Friday night "Brady Bunch" or "Partridge Family" fun. The grainy quality of the television stations we did get, was typically enough to force a weakening of eyesight and a subsequent trip to the optometrist for glasses we didn't otherwise need, save to watch TV.

If I am done complaining, you might be saying, I could get on with the television stations of today and the godsent offerings each makes. Ohhh, where does a TV lover begin? Yes, ABC, CBS, and NBC are still kicking ass, only changing to their logos slightly and their focus slightly more. They still have way too many news hours for my sensitive approach. But click a silent click down to Fox and you have Seinfeld re-runs and American Idol and all those fascinating trading spouses and other reality shows. Speaking of reality TV shows, I suggest for the real TV fan that you move to the television stations that at first were riding on others' coattails but have made a slot for themselves: The WB, a Warner Brothers conglomeration, seems to target and provide a place for the black population--often neglected on other major television stations save the occasional Cosby or Bernie Mac if you are lucky. The WB features a fantastic reality TV show hosted by Tara Banks called "America's Next Top Model."

CBS has the long standing "Big Brother," the award-winning "Survivor," and the top reality TV show, "Amazing Race;" NBC has the great new "Beauty and the Geek," and ABC has "The Bachelor" (this season , in Paris). But now that we have hundreds more than three television stations from which to plan our days and nights, though we pay more, we have access to Reality TV stations, Soap Opera stations, and of course, hundreds of sports stations and channels.

So if you'll excuse me, I need to get my TV-viewing clothes on, food prepped, and remote re-charged, for tonight...the skating stars and bad skaters will be paired in competition on one channel, the biggest loser will be a couple on another channel, and on yet another of my 700+ television stations, the "American Idol" auditions are kicking into second gear with their second day of auditions and our second night of long-awaited airing!

The Ritual of Racing to the Video Rental Store for New Video Releases

Some of us are such fanatics about new video releases that we practically stand in line at 5 a.m., our fingers and noses pressed against the glass of the shop, praying like the Mervyn's shopper for the place to "open, open, open...." Some of us, myself included are adamant about keeping up with the freshest of new video releases that we always make sure to have a copy of that new video releases guide they give away at the counter, so we can circle and highlight and X out the ones we must see, the ones we have already seen, and the ones we consider, unfortunately, as belonging in the must-miss category.

I go even further. As much as I dislike television advertising, when a new video release shoots across the screen, I perk up, snatch my special book, and list the new titles. Then I can't sleep, waiting for the "coming soon to video" to actually come to video.

I guess this compulsion to make lists of coming attractions came about because it used to be that I would have to wait too long: I was an English teacher at a community college, and would get so ensconced in the prepping, teaching, and paper-reading processes and activities that I would have to wait until the semester's close to watch anything, save new video releases. So when the grades were finally in, I would hit the video rental store (pre DVD days) and rent a stack of pictures I would then watch, movie marathon or moviethon style.

What's really pitiful is that although I am liberated from the commitments of working outside the home, I now work more than I would by leaving the house, so the new video releases list has gotten longer than I would like and the ritual of racing to the video rental store has happened far too infrequently. What this means is that my favorite actors have made numerous films I have yet to see, and/or I have no clue what is hot right now.

This is really tough on Academy Awards week. While my friends and I used to dress up, make appropriate dinner foods, and vote and hype and holler and scream on Academy Awards night, I now am saying, "What movie is that now? Which film did she star in?" Absolutely appalling.

So I have to update my list, including such movies as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with Brad and Angelina Jolie; Willa Wonka...(with the versatile Johnny Depp); and movies my absolute fav, Nic Cage, has done over the last two years that I have not had a chance to swoon over: after National Treasure, I am disgustingly at a loss for the brilliant Nic in Lords of War, National Treasure 2, The Weather Man, Electric God, Amarillo Slim, World Trade Center, Ant Bully, The Wicker Man, and Ghost Rider. Oh, wait, those last five titles go on the new video releases list. Guess I'll be standing in line again real soon.

I was so excited. I had been waiting for months to have enough money, and find a deep enough discount to purchase my flat panel lcd tv, and finally the moment had come. The 42" model flat panel lcd tv was playing the matrix 3, one of my favorite movies. I just can't get enough of the way that the special effects are seemlessly integrated into the well worked and intricate plot - visually impressive, and yet not showy at all. The way movies should be. But it looked so good on the 42" flat panel lcd tv that it was as if I had never seen it before even though, in fact, I had already watched it six or 7 times on my vintage black and white 8 inch standby at home that very day already. I recently babysat my niece. My sister was nice enough to let me use her computer while I watched her daughter. I was glad to have an opportunity to work while babysitting. I have a high speed cable connection to my computer and my sister has a dial up connection. I never realized how important a high speed cable connection to the Internet was until I did not have it. I did not realize how much slower a dial up connection in comparison.

The slower Internet connection is simply maddening for me. I am too busy thinking about my next step and I haven't even taken the first step. By the time the site downloads, my mind is on to other things. I need a high speed cable connection just to maintain my sanity.

The other obstacle I came across with the slower dial up connection was that I could not use the telephone while I was using the Internet. This is just unthinkable. I can think of dozens of times that I was on the phone while I was using my computer. My high speed Internet connection does not interfere with my phone service.

My sister uses call wave. Call wave alerts you when you have a phone call. It also takes messages. It also costs money. I figure that for the price of the answering service, my sister can afford a high speed cable connection for her computer. She works from home three days each week and her work requires her to be available to answer the phone. With a high speed cable connection, she could use her computer while she is working.

I still haven't talked my sister into getting a high speed cable connection, but I'm going to keep trying to persuade her. I do have a stake in this. I can save a lot of time and I can save myself a lot of frustration if she has a high speed Internet connection while I'm babysitting. Otherwise, my niece will just have to come to my house.

We use a Macintosh computer for music sharing. The application we have come to rely on is called Acquisition. It's a great, user-friendly music sharing program exclusive to the Macintosh platform. It allows you to download and upload concurrently, and provides helpful ratings to ensure that you are sharing with a reliable peer.

Acquisition is highly compatible with ITunes. We have been able to organize and play hours of music for parties by collaborating between Acquisition and ITunes. American Idol, Kelly Clarkson Is a Girl With Talent

My friend only wants one thing for Christmas. Well, one person. He wants Kelly Clarkson, first-year winner of the screamingly popular American Idol. He wrote me an email the other night extolling--as always--Kelly Clarkson's virtues and begging that I figure out a way to satisfy this one wish.

Granted, the girl has got gifts. Consider such songs as those my pal plays incessantly, songs such as "Since U Been Gone" and "Before Your Love/A Moment Like This" (both of which have some mildly decent metaphors). She sings them with a moderately skilled range, appeals to a great number of listeners (and viewers) in a semi-sexy semi-cutesy fashion, and has a clarity and familiarity of song lyrics that even this old lady can appreciate at some level.

But my young friend is serious about having Kelly Clarkson as a friend. He just wants to hang out with her, drink coffee, go on hikes...and you know, I can see them as hitting it off quite well in this respect. Kelly seems active, engaged, dynamic, willing to go on those mountain treks one day or cut out Christmas decorations another or futz about in the orchid garden another.

But I can't be cliché and give him Kelly Clarkson CDs; and besides, he belongs to one of those MP3 download clubs. I could do the next obvious thing and give him a Kelly Clarkson poster, or better, a life-sized Kelly Clarkson stand-up cardboard cutout. Or a Kelly Clarkson mug or potholder or keychain.

And I have heard about the stars who are accessible for such odd requests--along the lines of the baseball star who promises to hit a homer for the kid in the hospital--as making a quick video greeting or phone message, but my friend doesn't have any debilitating illness or disturbing brain damage, really, so Kelly might likely ignore my letters and requests.

And a one-time private concert won't do, for my spoiled friend says, no, he wants her singing here every day, delighting in her laughs, sharing her soul.

I understand his obsession (which is, don't worry, quite tongue-in-cheek innocuous); I have obsessions of my own--some of which involve, marginally, the most recent American Idol finalist, Beau Bice. But my friend's rejection of the gardening tools, Anne Rice books, and pounds of chocolate as inferior gifts, along with his adamancy about getting Kelly Clarkson here in all their stead is driving me bonkers!

Why Trying to Find a Good Yet Cheap TV Today Could Be Tricky

With all the new technologies available, it seems like most new TVs out there you have to put a down payment on, take out a loan, and possible put a mortgage or two on any property you own just to take the thing home. Does anyone even sell cheap TVs anymore, or are they all technological marvels destined to drive you into the poor home?

Fortunately, the older CRT technology is still available and still popular. Actually, the advent of the newer technologies makes this a good time to get a cheap TV that actually is quite decent. If you are looking for a cheap TV you'll be pretty much limited to the CRT type, but the prices on these have dropped significantly in response to the newer types, like plasma screens and LCD TVs. For what you would pay for a LCD or plasma TV you can get a much bigger CRT TV. And CRT TV's aren't bad at all, they represent a technology that has been mastered, even if it is obsolete.

Even if you already own or are going to buy a plasma screen or LCD TV, it's always nice to have a cheap TV or two on hand as well. You can lug them around, put them in high risk areas (such as on your work bench), and generally treat them like crap without worrying too much about it. As great as it would be to have a state of the art 70 inch plasma beast, I think I'd be terrified of damaging it somehow, and would almost be afraid to turn the thing on.

So as of 2007, the best cheap TVs you're going to find are going to be CRTs. They're bulky and a pain in the ass to move around, but there's tons of different types to choose from and they're generally extremely reliable. Keep your eyes on the price of LCD TVs however. It's been dropping steadily recently, and pretty soon will be in line with their CRT counterparts. Then you'll be able to have a cheap TV that is also state of the art.

The question you have to ask yourself is how important is television to you? If you find yourself watching a lot of TV, love sports games, video games, videos, and or all of the above, it may be worth splurging a little for a bigger or higher quality TV. If you spend an hour or less a day watching television, you probably will be fine with a cheap TV.

The high resolution image of a HDTV LCD TV Has No Match

It was the day of the big game, and we were trying to decide who's house to watch it at. Of course, Mark's house has the advantage that it is central to everybody - 5 miles from me, 6 miles from Joe, 12 miles from Sam and Renee. But then again, Mark is a new father, and if we are there, we'll always be being interrupted by the baby crying, every few minutes, or being shown photos, or changing diapers.

We thought about having it at Sam and Renee's house, but although they have a hdtv lcd tv, they are way on the outskirts - far from everyone except for Mark. And anyway, they are horrible house cleaners and a few of us are allergic to mold. Finally, we decided to have it at my house. I have a hdtv lcd tv, although not quite as brand new and spiffy as Sam and Renee's hdtv lcd tv. Besides that, I always serve the best snacks and there is plenty of rome for everyone.

The day of the big game was at hand. I had bought new speakers for my hdtv lcd tv, which added High definition surround sound to the high resolution image. They all came over about 11:15 which left time for a beer run and some shmoozing and small talk. Finally, the hour of the big game was at hand. From the kickoff onward, the home team was winning, at least for the first quarter, and watching the big image on the hdtv lcd tv, we felt like we were all part of the action.

However, things can change pretty quickly in professional football. Soon, it was the opponents, the Minnesota Vikings who were on offense, and by the second quarters end, they had a two touchdown lead. This could not stand. We all cheered pretty loudly as we watched the big image on the hdtv lcd tv, but we were glad for the halftime break so we could run out and grab some more munchies.

By the time I got back, they were about to kick off again. It was a short kick, and the team recovered. We were all hooting and hollering, watching the high definition image in gloriously many colors saturate the television. It was down to the line, but in the end, the home team win. We were a bunch of very grateful fans, I can tell you right now.

With Respect to the Quality of the Image, Plasma technology is the Best TV

It's really hard to say what the best TV is these days. With plasma and LCD TVs coming out left and right, capable of HDTV and EDTV, its dizzying trying to keep up with the advances. Every company claims that they have the best TV, and I'm finding it pretty hard to tell the difference. Since I'm in the market for a new television, I've been looking into it, and here's what I think so far.

Plasma technology is in my opinion the most advanced technology on the market as of today. However, I'm not really sure plasma TVs are the best TVs. First of all, they are riddled with all sorts of technical issues from what I've been able to determine. Of course, the people who make them don't really want you to know that, but from everything I've been reading and hearing, they have a maximum life expectancy of maybe 5 years tops. Sure, they are probably the best TVs out there when it comes to picture quality, but you have to weigh it against their still exuberant price tag, and low lifespan. They are pretty sweet though, and when I see one in a store I can't help but drool just a little!

LCD screen televisions are almost as good with respect to quality, in my opinion. Maybe not the best TVs available, but they may just be the best combination of luxury and affordability. Of course, they are still fairly expensive, especially when you start getting into the 30+ inch sizes, but their price tags are dropping. It looks to me that LCD technology in general is going to be a sort of standard in the near future, both with televisions and monitors. For this reason, I suspect that many of the best TVs will in fact be made with LCD technology, even if its not the most state of the art concept we have available to us.

Then of course there's the good old CRT TV. These are clearly not the best TVs with respect to the quality of the image, but they work great, are tried and tested, and always very affordable compared to their more advanced cousins. The money you save on going with CRT TV may allow you to get a much larger TV. Sure, it'll be clunky and a pain in the ass to move, but bigger is better, right?

After all is said and done, it's impossible to say what the best TV is. The best TV is the one that meets yours needs better than any other, so it really depends on what your needs are.

But then again, having an lcd television is useful in itself.

I mean, it will last longer than your crt system that you have now, and besides that, it will produce a better image. It also uses much less power than a standard cathode ray tube, and because of this, it is much nicer to use and preserve your electricity bill at some kind of a reasonable rate. Who wants to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars just to use their big screen tv. I know that I don't, and I'm sure that you don't too. And besides that, many scientists think that the flat panel of a hdtv ready lcd is easier on the eyes than the rounded panel popular on other kinds of tvs. Its really a good deal all around, so you can hardly go wrong if you think about it.
